Protected Species Impact Assessment
Project: Barnstable County Jail and House of Correction, Sandwich, MA
Client: Asset Management
Epsilon prepared Draft and Final Environmental Impact Reports for a new County Jail and House of Corrections on the Massachusetts Military Reservation. Rare species of concern known to occur near the proposed project included eastern box turtle and several moth species endemic to pine barren communities. To better understand potential rare species impacts Epsilon designed and implements studies to search for eastern box turtle and map vegetation suitable as rare moth habitat. Epsilon also developed a conservation plan to offset potential impacts to eastern box turtle.
Project: Nantucket Airport Expansion Project, Nantucket, MA
Client: Nantucket Airport Commission

Epsilon assisted the Nantucket Airport Commission analyze terminal expansion alternatives, runway safety area enhancements, construction of new taxiways, and other proposed airside and landside improvements to the Nantucket Memorial Airport, one of the busiest airports in Massachusetts.  A key environmental challenge included protecting nearly 20 state protected plants, moths, and bird species.  As part of this issue, Epsilon designed, implemented, and managed comprehensive protected species on airport property.  Using the results of these surveys and GIS methodologies, Epsilon identified and quantified protected species impacts.

Project: Logan International Airport, Nesting Bird Survey, Boston, MA
Client: Massport
Prior to implementing proposed vegetation management at Logan International Airport, it was necessary to ensure that the work would not cause an adverse impact to Upland Sandpipers, a state-listed endangered species known to have nested at the airport. Epsilon conducted a nesting bird survey in the project area, and concluded that Upland Sandpipers were not nesting within or adjacent to the project area during the observation period. As a result, NHESP authorized Massport to move forward with the project.
Project: Stony Brook Power Plant, Ludlow, MA
Client: Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company
Epsilon is assisting MMWEC's plans for a new power plant adjacent to their existing facility located in Ludlow, Massachusetts. To better understand potential impacts to rare species known to occur near the location of the proposed facility, Epsilon completed surveys for the blue spotted salamander and climbing fern. Survey results indicated the presence of blue spotted salamander on the proposed project site. Epsilon is now working with MMWEC in consultation with the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program to avoid impacts to this species.
