MassCEC Wind Turbine Acoustic Study
MassCEC Wind Turbine Acoustic Study
Massachusetts
Epsilon along with Northeast Wind is providing support to Resource Systems Group with a research study on wind turbine acoustics. The project is being done for the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) and Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP). The MassCEC and MassDEP are looking to measure the level and quality of sound emissions from a variety of operating wind turbines in Massachusetts.
Epsilon will be conducting extensive field programs to measure the level and quality of sound emissions from operating wind turbines under various wind regimes and topography. Fieldwork, taking place over a two-week period per site, will occur in 2013. After the completion of the fieldwork, the monitored data will be analyzed to gain a better understanding of the characteristics of wind turbine sound and the parameters that contribute to it.
Meteorological data during the field programs will be collected using on-site meteorological towers and LIDAR systems to better understand how wind speed and wind direction vary over the turbine height. Acoustical data will be measured at various distances from the wind turbines and will include broadband, one-third octave band, low frequency and infrasound, and interior/exterior sound levels. Wind turbine operational data will also be provided by the site operators.
